The advice of the locals was to head out to the mountain biking trails early, really early, to avoid the intense desert heat. However, when our alarm went off at 6am, the sky was overcast and the ground was wet from the rain. Plus, Aaron and I were too tired to hit the trails that early.
Once we were finally able to get out of bed, we packed up (resolving that we would never stay at that particular, stinky campground ever again) and got ready to get out to ride. Even at eight in the morning, the day was starting out much cooler than we have been seeing on this trip.
After a quick breakfast at a cute little cafe, we were ready and set to ride Slick Rock! There are two options to ride: a 2.5 mile practice loop and the 12 mile trail. The reviews all suggested starting with the practice loop to get the feel of the steep hills and bumpy terrain of the full course.
Riding out onto the course, our fate would be determined by a divergence on the trail—one way was the short practice loop, the other direction would take us on the full ride. We decided to hit up the full course. This is, after all, one of IMBA's “Epic Rides”.
